Elizabeth Mayorca offers this intimate class on writing your family in your own voice for the second time! You are welcome to attend 1 or all 4 classes in this series. Writers will enjoy a dynamic 2 hours during each class exploring examples in literature, prompts, writing and conversation.

About the event

Elizabeth Mayorca will be teaching a hybrid online/in-person course: Write Your Family In Your Own Voice. Though this is memoir/creative nonfiction, we will explore speculative writing: writing in the voice of family members, exploring ancestors who came before (who we may have never met) and imagining their lives (based on facts we know) in order to understand how our family relationships evolved. We will search for the scents, phrases, music, clothing, motivations, discouragements, triumphs of our ancestors and finally write ourselves as a member of our own family.
How do memoirists keep their voices distinct while honoring the voice of family members?
Through the use of interviews, dialogue, letters, speculation, invention, and memory, we will look at how authors bring their family members to life on the page. We will read from memoirs by Kao Kalia Yang, James McBride, Kat Chow, Maya Shanbhag Lang, Marcelo Hernandez-Castillo, Laura Davis, Laraine Herring,…
