About the event

Tongass Mist Writing invites you to join this free event and then register for its matching 5-week Creative Writing series with author and musician Elizabeth Mayorca: Writing to Understand Your Family While Finding Your Own Voice: A Generative & Wholly Supportive Creative Writing Salon.  5 Wednesdays in May 2024 will be spent in supportive creative writing community as we explore this theme. All classes are online.

Tongass Mist Writing invites you to join this 5-week Creative Writing series with author and musician Elizabeth Mayorca: Writing to Understand Your Family While Finding Your Own Voice: A Generative & Wholly Supportive Creative Writing Salon. On 5 Saturdays in March 2024, we will explore the practice of meditative, lyrical essays and write about our families of origin in the pursuit of understanding our roots through an excavation of memories, conversation, objects, traditions and taboos. This is the perfect journey for all writers yearning to tell their own story, but unsure how their family frames it.

Tongass Mist Writing's Ruth Underhill will host this event series taught by Elizabeth Mayorca, a musician, poet, memorist, playwright and a violin and viola instructor for Mayorca Music School. She has taught a popular memoir writing series with Hugo House in Austin, Texas prior to this series with Tongass Mist Writing and enjoyed it thoroughly. The culture of Mayorca's class is one of positive feedback and nurturing the growth of each writer through community, prompts, coaching and the chance to share your work with a responsive and supportive group of creative writers. Elizabeth Mayorca has been published in multiple literary journals including the Maine Review.
