Tongass Mist Writing Summer Fundraiser in Tenakee Springs, Alaska!
Tongass Mist Pies now offers fresh-baked pies and ready-to-bake frozen pies, available for scheduled pick up for your summer parties and family gatherings. Whole and Hand Pies (Ready-to-Bake): $40.00 / $10.00. Whole Fresh Baked Pie (Ordered In Advance): $60.00 / $15.00. Text Ruth at 309.310.8572 for menu offerings. Alternatively, check the Tongass Mist Writing Facebook Page or the Tongass Mist Writing website (www.tongassmist.com) for menu and event updates. Proceeds from the homemade food sales support the operational costs of Tongass Mist Writing, Scholarships for Tongass Mist Writing classes and retreats and other Tenakee programs. We are open five days a week in June, July and August 2026.
Sundays and Mondays you will find self serve pocket pies for sale in the counter refrigerator. If you're lucky, you may enjoy other local bake sales which will be taking place on certain Sundays and Mondays! We are a small community with many incredible bakers.

Be sure to drop by the Historic Blue Moon Cafe for pie, good conversation and hot coffee all day. We are located just adjacent to the public hot springs bath house. We are between the big red fire hall and the public bath house, just past the Tenakee Market and large ferry dock if you're walking in from the harbor.

Tongass Mist Pies is a summer fundraiser in its' second summer of tasty pie making! It is operated by the owner of Tongass Mist Writing for the benefit of the Tenakee Springs community and Tongass Mist Writing.

Tongass Mist Writing offers pies and other food items under the cottage food/ homemade food sale laws of the State of Alaska to our Tenakee community and visitors to Tenakee Springs during summer months. The proceeds from sales help support the operating costs of Tongass Mist Writing: scholarships, administrative expenses, online presence and website management, retreat costs, online class teacher and visiting author stipends and honorariums, and other Tongass Mist Writing expenses.
Our SWEET PIES include Strawberry/Rhubarb, Tenakee Rhubarb, Blueberry, Apple, Key Lime, Cherry, Mixed Berry and More.

Purchase our pies and other homemade food items to support the ongoing work of Tongass Mist Writing within the literary community of Alaska and beyond. We provide creative writing retreats, classes, editing, resources and more in Southeast Alaska and beyond year round through the independent efforts of owner Ruth Underhill BSN, MFA-Writing. The work of Tongass Mist Writing is first independent and then also done in partnership with authors and arts and culture institutions whenever possible.
Our goal is to connect creative writers and communities with awe for the Tongass National Forest and the creative writing life. We do this through retreats located in Southeast Alaska's Tongass in communities like Sitka, Juneau and Tenakee Springs. We do this by offering online creative writing classes, mentorship series, tutoring, editing services and community creative writing events. This creative effort includes the community we foster through our pie sales in Tenakee Springs. You wouldn't believe how many creative writers and parents of creative writers we have met through the synergy of PIE!

This is the second year of Tongass Mist Pies in Tenakee Springs, Alaska.
​
During Summer 2025 we sold out of the Historic Shamrock building in Tenakee Springs. While we had a great business run and record breaking revenue for current food sales in the small community of Tenakee, we were unable to turn a profit from two months of fundraising efforts due to challenging overhead fees connected to use of the bakery. Still, we made the most of the summer!---
During our first season of Tongass Mist Pies, we made many new friends by serving pie to visitors and the local community in Tenakee Springs, Alaska. We were also able to make and serve meals for our first Tenakee Writers Retreat with former Alaska Author Laureate Heather Lende out of the Historic Shamrock building! Additionally, Tongass Mist Writing hosted a community literary reading which was a special event in which two local writers read their work for an audience for the first time. Most importantly, folks enjoyed tasty homemade food, good strong coffee and lots of incredible conversations in the hospitable space we created for our community and her summer visitors.
This Summer 2026 we are thrilled to sell sweet and savory pies from The Historic Blue Moon Cafe in Tenakee Springs, Alaska. The Historic Blue Moon Cafe is now operated as a community gathering space with an adjoining community greenhouse. Our overhead costs are lower this summer thanks to cooperative agreements with the owners of the now 'New Moon Cafe' who are willing to share space in exchange for utility coverage and other contributions. We have worked with the incredible owners of the New Moon Cafe, Kevin and Carlene Allred, to open a one room local Tenakee artists' gallery within this special historic spot. The Tenakee Artists' Gallery includes paintings, fiber art, intricate drawings by colored pencil which seem like photographs, locally made jewelry, beach drivel wall art, local stickers, prints, notecards and more!
