What do your characters believe in? What guides them through the myriad challenges they face in their narratives? What or who do they worship, and how does this influence their decisions and interactions with others?


In this class, we'll take a comprehensive look at the pivotal role of faith—whether religious, spiritual, or secular—in constructing sturdy and complex characters that resonate with readers. We will delve into the intricacies of belief systems and how they shape the motivations, conflicts, and growth of characters within a story. By examining the works of notable authors such as Deeshaw Philyaw, Monica West, Mary Miller, and Nicole Krauss, we will uncover the diverse ways in which faith manifests in literature. Each of these writers offers unique perspectives on belief, exploring themes of identity, morality, and the human condition.
