A story unfolds in a specific location, within a culture, and a tangible reality. What is the name of the Place in your narrative? How will you introduce Place to your reader? In what other ways does Place manifests, and what does your reader encounter through Place? How does Place encapsulate themes, secrets, and conflicts in your story?
Approach the depiction of place with the same attention you devote to character development. Examine contemporary literary examples, as well as some classic ones. Reflect on the role Place holds in your writing, and explore how it can be honored as both identity and reality, enhancing the story and adding layers of thematic complexity. Find ways to immerse your reader in your selected Place, offering them vivid and uplifting experiences they might not encounter in their hometown or typical life journeys outside of literature.
